VOICES – using your creative voice for science

Using the arts to explore the effect climate change is having on Norfolk’s endangered insects. An innovative project co-created by UEA SCI Employability staff and SCI / LDC students.

UEA science and creative writing students, in collaboration with UEA Science alumni and the Norfolk Wildlife Trust have designed three templates for primary and secondary schools, raising their aspirations as citizen scientists and confidence in their voice to make a difference with climate change awareness by using the arts for science communication.

The templates can be used in lessons and UEA students hope they will raise awareness of how insects are in danger of becoming extinct due to habitat loss caused by climate change and other environmental factors, as well as celebrate the importance of insects for a healthy planet.

All poems and artwork produced during summer 2022 were included in an exhibition at Norfolk Wildlife Trust Cley Visitor centre in October 2022, with exhibition panels designed by UEA Science students. All insect artwork was entered into a competition, with some drawings chosen for an insect sock to be made by UEA Biological Sciences Aluma Lucy Jeffrey, who has a mission to help save endangered species with her ethical company www.barekind.co.uk. 10% of proceeds from sales will go towards funding work by Butterfly Conversation.
